(1931) This screenplay by Elmer Rice, adapted from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, takes place on a New York City street from one evening until the following afternoon. It studies the daily and complex lives of the people living in the neighborhood and their sad and often tragic interactions. Except for one scene which takes place inside a taxi, the entire film was shot on a single set depicting half a city block of house fronts.
