In this episode of the Longines Chronoscope, Harold E. Stassen, president of the University of Pennsylvania and Republican presidential candidate, discusses his campaign, foreign policy initiatives, and relationship with Eisenhower and Joseph McCarthy. He repeatedly characterizes his plan for the US as having a very “active” foreign policy in order to protect US security. He does not advocate isolationism, but believes that Americans need to reduce spending abroad. He advocates turning other nations away from socialism, and “helping them to help themselves.” He is questioned on what the differences are between he and Eisenhower. They seem to be few since Stassen claims to agree with Eisenhower on a number of foreign policy issues. He then discusses what primaries he in entered in and what support he has, which leads Hazlit to ask him if McCarthy will be supporting him in 1952 like he did in 1948.
