Since its founding in 1908, General Motors has built over 450 million vehicles and currently manufactures cars in 35 different countries. To mark their 100th birthday, they rolled out what they are calling the "reinvention" of the automobile - the all-electric drive Chevrolet Volt.
The day kicked off with a live global broadcast in Detroit, where the production model of the Chevrolet Volt was revealed. The revolutionary extended-range electric vehicle will deliver up to 40 miles per gallon of gasoline and emissions-free driving for hundreds of additional miles.
During the last century, GM has been responsible for many innovations that have helped shape personal transportation - like the electric self-starter, the fully automatic transmission and shatter-proof safety glass. Today, they are looking to the next hundred years by leading the way in alternative fuel technology, hydrogen fuel cell development, Flex-Fuel vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
