While at UCLA, classmates such as Jackie Robinson, Woody Strode and (life long friend) Tom Bradley. Tom Bradley and he (Bradley’s first political effort) fought for Mr. Hartsfield to join UCLA’s ROTC back in 1940. They succeeded, and he became UCLA’s first African–American to become a commissioned officer. College was interrupted by WWII, and Mr. Hartsfield served in the South Pacific as one of the few Black officers that were allowed to see combat. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
