Roger holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology from State University College in Buffalo, N.Y., and an MBA from Syracuse University. Steve Madewell—A Middlegrounds Update Stephen Madewell is executive director of Metroparks of the Toledo Area, the agency that oversees more than 11,000 acres of natural area parks in Lucas County. Steve will discuss the Metroparks launch of a comprehensive planning process to establish a long term vision and implementation strategy. He is the eighth person to serve at the helm of the organization since its founding in 1928. Steve will give an update on the Middlegrounds Metropark project. Mr. Madewell has been in the position just over one year. Metroparks is the fourth park district he has served and the third where he has been director. Most recently, he was director of the Lake Metroparks, an 8,000 acre park system in Lake County in northeast Ohio. He was also director of the Geauga Park District. Metroparks of the Toledo Area is a regional government agency with nine Metroparks, preserving internationally important natural areas and nationally significant historical sites. The park system stretches from the Oak Openings of Western Lucas County to the shores of Lake Erie east of Toledo to the Maumee River corridor. Steve and his wife, Mary Jo, have made their new home in downtown Toledo.

Fifteen years ago, Nestlé Purina PetCare recognized the benefits of allowing employees to bring their pets to work and started a “Pets at Work” program. Award-winning actor John O’Hurley is working with Purina to conduct nationwide search to identify America’s most pet-friendly workplaces with the “Purina Pets At Work Contest.” Pet lovers can submit a story and photos about how their company is pet friendly, and Purina will help one winning business become even more pet friendly and donate $10,000 to a local pet welfare organization. December 3, 2012: Mari Davies— “Toledo Ballet.” Mari Davies, Executive Director of the Toledo Ballet, will discuss what the Ballet is currently doing to promote its mission via performance, instruction, and outreach. Members of the Toledo Ballet troupe will perform. Mari earned a BA in English and a Bachelors in Education from the University of Toledo. Before becoming Executive Director in 2006, Mari served as Grants Coordinator for the Ballet. Previous to the Toledo Ballet, Mari was a freelance writer , Assistant Director of Partners in Education, and a teacher at Bedford High School, Maumee Valley Country Day School, and The American International School in Israel. Ms. Davies is founder and co-chair of Anne Frank in the World Fund of the Toledo Community Foundation. In 2010, Mari was a YWCA Milestones Honoree. She is a member of the Advertising Club of Toledo, Zonta Club, and the Toledo Arts and Cultural Leaders Organization.

Fabian Aguirre recently received his PhD in the field of psychology. Fabian has received training from some of the top researchers affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Texas at Austin. He has a range of experiences in a number of areas, including (1) program development and coordination in academic and research settings; 2) independently teaching at a University level; and 3) working with students of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Fabian has been actively involved in multiple programs geared toward facilitating the education process among underrepresented students, such as 1) Cal-SOAP, a program designed to provide students with resources to assist in post secondary education, 2) Latino Leadership Council, an organization designed to unite and empower Latino students and student organization, and 3) Summer Undergraduate Research Program, a program aimed at providing hands-on training that will give underrepresented students a competitive edge when applying to top doctoral training programs. Fabian is a strong advocate of higher education. He grew up in a small, Mexican, migrant community in central California where education was not highly valued and access to quality education was nonexistent. Fabian, like many first-generation college students, could not consult with family member about higher education. In turn, he had to overcome many educational challenges and is willing to provide academic advice to students seeking higher education in Liberal Arts.
