The Hollywood dream was not what attracted him there; instead he identified with the local artists and their desire to embrace the uncommon. Sunny mostly slept outside and sometimes in an inoperable car, never far from his large cart filled with everyday necessities and personal treasures. Everyone knew Sunny and eventually embraced him as "The King of Venice". He could often be found on or near the boardwalk holding court with the other local artists. He now writes all of Steed's songs that range from stories about relationships to alcoholism. Aaron also sings and plays guitar for the band. Steed is also comprised of James O'Toole on bass and keyboards, Nick Roberts on drums and backup vocals and Corina Apodaca on vocals. Their music could be described as a cross between country and early 70's folk. Steed's sound is melodic and the lyrics will make you think. In fact, the drummer had to leave the Hen House early one night because his mother wanted him home. Shotgun No Challenge is lead by Andy Chen who sings and plays guitar. Ken Sugihara provides vocals and guitar. While Daniel Ogier plays bass and Joe Herrera is on the drums. They all rock hard. The drums kick, the bass bumps and the guitars slash. It's plain to see that these young men love playing music. Westchester, LA based Shotgun No Challenge's slogan is "westside softcore established 2001." Sharon Farber conducted and played keyboards. She was accompanied by longtime friends, David Lockertz on bass, Roy Friedman on keyboards and David Kontesz on drums. Ivishai Cohen played trumpet, Milton Nelson played keyboards and John Sullivan played upright bass. This group of musicians created some beautiful music together. This extensive cast of musicians was lead by Miles Perlich. Miles not only produced and arranged the tracks, he played the congas, coro, percussion and a bit of spoken word as well. He was accompanied by Ravi Carman on flute, baratone and tenor saxophone, Merlo on bass, Adam Topol on drums, timbales and itotele, Dixi Ipina on quito, bongos, clave and percussion, Luke Alberti on keyboards, Mark Bagasao on tenor saxophone, Adam Rundquist on trombone, Allan Valladares on trumpet, and David Gaeta on cuica, agogo, chekere, bata drum, and percussion. Miles also featured special guests Bobby Matos on lead vocals, Trevy on coro, Juliete Flores on spoken word, and last but not least, Michael Sanchez with party noises. This is Latin music played with a respect and honor for tradition. As musicians and fans, this group understands and loves the music they play. Most are about stuff from my life, but with some hyperbole, metaphor, and abused liberties. Some are fiction, most are non-fiction-ish. Insert current hybrid genre with "folk" in the name here. I'll avoid saying it sounds like this guy meets that guy. Because I was there when those two guys met, and this was not the sound. However, I will tell you that these are my favorite guys, in an order I thought of: Pete Steinberg, Nat Keefe of Hot Buttered Rum String band, Tim Seely, Tim Bluhm, Mother Hips, Patrick Park, Uncle Tupelo, Elliott Smith, The Jayhawks, Ryan Adams, Radiohead, Neil Young, Bob Dylan. Never been married. Born 1977 in Northern California. Live in 2004 in Southern California. I like to run, swim, camp, ski, watch football, cook, eat, and read, non-fiction mostly. I won't list TV as something I like to do, but I do watch it, at least a little almost everyday. Nikki Hong is a pop / rock singer / songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. Nikki was born in South Korea but has lived all over the U.S. before settling in L.A. to attend the University of Southern California. Although the 23 year-old was heavily influenced by music throughout her life, her ambition to become a musician was kept very much a secret. Knowing she would gain little support from friends and family, she often wrote songs late at night or in her privacy. In college, after a reluctant performance in front of a songwriting class, she discovered the excitement of sharing her music. Nikki's first instrument was the piano, which she studied for six years before she picked up the violin. She then went on to teach herself to play the guitar after watching a Guns N Roses music video in the early 90's. Frustrated over having to relocate every so often, she started writing songs when she was 12. Her music became a personal emotional vent and dealt with everything from relationship issues to the struggles of everyday life. Some of her influences include Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair, Matchbox Twenty and Fleetwood Mac. Having finished school, Nikki is now actively pursuing music. Leslie's lyrics are about life, love and happiness. Based in the Silver Lake/Echo Park area of Los Angeles, Nighthawk represents the alternative music scene of the city. Natty Roots co-produced the track along with June 22. Natty Roots performed all the vocals. He is an extremely talented lyricist. From Malibu to Redlands to Long Beach, this band travels many miles each week to play and rehearse. But these guys don't mind because the music of The Mynzeer Ensemble is based on friendship, respect and expression. Self-described as "new-world music", the group's sound ranges from African to Indian to Jazz to Cuban and Western Classical. The Mynzeer Ensemble is lead by Miles Shrewsbery on hand drums and percussion. J.P. Maramba accompanies him on acoustic bass, along with Brad Colton on hand drums and percussion, Patrick Richey on hand drums and percussion, Michael Birnbryer on tenor sax and flute and Matt Zebley on C horn and alto clarinet. If you can imagine three guys jamming on hand drums, while two other guys blow melodic lines on horns and yet another guy playing thick bass notes, then you'll have some idea of what The Mynzeer Ensemble sounds like. HenHouseStudios.com Many people ask us how we got the name H.B. Surround Sound. So after explaining it too many times, here it is for all that don't know. All five of us grew up in Huntington Beach, leading to the H.B. Each member of the band was influenced by different as well as similar styles of music. While Jon Jon was pounding his bongos to his impressive reggae collection, Doug was learning as many Heavy Metal, MetallicA, NOFX, and Led Zepplin riffs that he could. Matt and Jake meanwhile were submerged into the Beatles, classic rock, and punk; while Mike was listening to everything and mastering it at the same time. In high school we all were deep in the local music scene as we still are today. This is where we got Surround Sound. All of the different varieties and styles of music and sounds we heard that surrounded us as we grew up now come out in our music. With a Chinese zither securely strapped in the passenger seat of her car, actress and musician Gwendoline Yeo pulled up to The Hen House one sunny afternoon. And over the next couple of hours she put nearly everyone in the studio into a trance with her wonderful playing. Her music varies from traditionally-influenced Gu Zheng styles to dreamy sounds and ambient textures with jazz, blues, and acid rock overtones (think Pink Floyd jamming with Steely Dan). HenHouseStudios.com Freelance Johnson has an attitude that is everything surf culture embraces. To Freelance Johnson what really matters is the next big wave, bong hits and beautiful girls. Their lead singer "Crash" is an avid surfer who can be frequently found at the breakwater at Venice Beach, California riding the waves. Their sound is not reminiscent of the traditional twangy guitar surf music of the 1960's, but rather a reflection of the modern surf movement. The ideals of this new movement are reflected the song "Kali4na" where Crash sings "I gotta worn ya, this is California", a song that expresses surfers' territorial rights to the best waves and at the same time their frustration with the increasing pollution of the ocean's water. The band got it's name from the famous surfing scene from the movie "Apocalypse Now". In the scene, Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall) commands a California surfing champion named Freelance Johnson into the waves even as the enemy continues to shell the beach.
