Battleship Potemkin is a feature film classic from master Russian director Sergei Eisenstein. The thrust of the movie is a dramatic retelling of the events leading to the Bolshevik Revolution. The film centers on Russian ship Prince Potemkin where a horribly bloody mutiny took place. Eisenstein signals this as the jumping off point for the Revolution. The cast of the film were all amateur hand picked by Eisenstein, and his treatment of people in the film lends more to the character of masses than to individuals. This is truly Eisenstein’s most powerful and lasting work. Battleship Potemkin soars as one of the greatest silent films ever made.

This is a pretty cool video of a torpedo blowing up a destroyer. The torpedo doesnt actually hit the destroyer, but it detonates a few meters under it, causing a big void. When water surges to replace that void, the force it creates, splits the destroyer in half.

Set in the middle of the Civil War, Hearts in Bondage is a tempestuous love story that ebbs and flows with the events surrounding the famous Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack, two armored battleships going head to head. Superb actors Mae Clarke and James Dunn are lovers who’ve been separated by their family’s Civil War loyalties. Dunn is a Union naval officer on the USS Monitor and Clarke’s brother is a Confederate naval officer on the USS Merrimack. Closely mirroring real events, the story builds to an explosive climax as the bitter rivals will fight against each other on their respective battleships. Some exemplary special effects (for the 1930s) make the combat scenes vivid and engrossing. But overall, Hearts in Bondage is a passionate love story and with Mae Clarke and James Dunn, it’s a special motion picture experience.

The premier British heavy bomber of the war, the Lancaster was a redesign of the failed twin engine Manchester design. With a few airframe modifications and the change to four Rolls-Royce "Merlin" engines, the Lancaster became a truly great aircraft. In addition to the many night area bombing missions conducted by the RAF, Lancaster's were used for many special missions, including the "Dam Busters" raid (the first precision bombing attack of the war), the bombing of the battleship Tirpitz, and the delivery of the 20,000 lb "Grand Slam" bombs. After the war the airframe was again redesigned to accept four contra-rotating turboprop engines, and, as the "Shackleton", served until well into the 1960's.

From 1943 and set in WW II, the stooges are the only survivors of an American ship sunk by an enemy torpedo. Adrift on a raft, they come upon a German battleship and by various means, such as Moe disguising himself as Hitler, and Curly and Larry as Goering and Goebbels, manage to capture the enemy ship.

The classic Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, a silent movie, is regarded as a yardstick in cinema "engagé", with its theme of the working class rising up against their ruthless and couldn't-care-less oppressors (czarist Russia), and, despite its evident propaganda rationale, as one of the greatest films ever made. For those who haven't seen it yet, don't overlook the (famous) Odessa steps sequence. In brief: a baby's pram rolls uncontrollably down stairs during a riot, Cossack soldiers open fire on the crowd, the people of Odessa scatter and run - and become sitting targets. Although this scene has been replicated (some might prefer the word "quoted") many times throughout movie-making history, it still preserves intact its awe-inspiring quality.
