Karl der Große hat in dunkler Zeit Europa geeint, eine Vision von Frieden, Sicherheit und Ordnung verwirklicht. Carolus Magnus gilt aber zugleich auch als blutrünstiger Krieger und Despot. Dem grausamen Herrscher traut die Legende jede nur erdenkliche Verwerflichkeit zu: vom Brudermord bis zum Inzest. Mit Hilfe hochrangiger Historiker begibt sich "Sphinx – Geheimnisse der Geschichte" auf Spurensuche nach einer ambivalenten Persönlichkeit.

Die Völkerwanderung ist einer der legendärsten und faszinierendsten Stoffe in unserer Geschichte. Sie ist zu neuer Bedeutung gelangt, da moderne Historiker den Germanen einen entscheidenden Anteil an der Entstehung Europas beimessen. Es war wohl der Hunger, der die nomadischen Hunnen im Jahr 376 nach Christus aus den mongolischen Steppen vertrieb. 40 Jahre zog ihr Treck auf der Suche nach einer neuen Bleibe durch Europa: eine Irrfahrt durch die heutige Türkei und den Balkan. Vor ihnen flohen nicht nur die Westgoten, sondern auch die Vandalen. Erst die Schlacht auf den Katalaunischen Feldern in Frankreich führte zum Rückzug der Hunnen.

Der Film stellt in seinem ersten Teil das Kolosseum vor, das "achte Weltwunder, das Zentrum der Unterhaltung und der Gewalt in der Antike". Bei den Kämpfen auf Leben und Tod kamen insgesamt etwa 3oo.ooo Menschen um. Spannung, Nervenkitzel und Todesfurcht "jagten den Menschen wohlige Schauer über den Rücken". Die römischen Kaiser befriedigten die Sensationsgier der Massen. "Brot und Spiele" dienten als Mittel der Propaganda und der Politik.

Die dramatische Geschichte über das Bauwerk Kolosseum im Alten Rom. Um es zu errichten, benutzten die Römer bahnbrechende Technologie, die wir noch heute einsetzten, während das Geld für dieses monumentale Projekt ein Volk versklavte und einen Tempel zum Einsturz brachte. Die N24 Doku über die Männer, die es erschufen und diejenigen, die darin kämpften und starben.

Lange bevor die Welt von Rom oder Griechenland gehört hatte, baute Ägypten eine Zivilisation auf, die uns noch heute begeistert. Den Ägyptern standen nur wenige und sehr einfache Werkzeuge zur Verfügung, dennoch erbauten sie gigantische Pyramiden, Festungen, Dämme, Bewässerungskanäle und Tempel in sandigen Wüstengebieten. Damit legten sie einen der wichtigsten Grundsteine menschlicher Zivilisation. Aber es gab auch Misserfolge und jeder Herrscher leistete seinen eigenen Beitrag – auf gute oder auf schlechte Weise.

Ein Mord erschütterte im Jahr 80 v. Chr. das kleine verschlafene Landstädtchen Ameria. Sextus Roscius, ein angesehener und wohlhabender Bürger war erschlagen worden. Auf diese zwar bedauerliche, aber doch eher gewöhnliche Bluttat folgte bald darauf ein Aufsehen erregender Prozess in Rom. Dort nämlich wurde der Sohn des Toten, ebenfalls Sextus Roscius mit Namen, des Mordes angeklagt. Bald war offensichtlich, dass es sich um eine politisch äußerst gefährliche Angelegenheit handelte.

Rom und Karthago - einst die bedeutsamsten Mächte im Mittelmeerraum. Während die Punier, so hießen die Karthager bei den Römern, regen Handel betrieben, bezog das römische Imperium seine Stärke aus Eroberungen. Die punischen Kriege zogen sich mit Unterbrechung über fast 100 Jahre hin. Die erste bewaffnete Auseinandersetzung, ausgelöst durch Streitigkeiten auf Sizilien, begann im Jahr 264 v. Chr. Die Truppen der Römer waren zahlenmäßig überlegen und besser ausgerüstet. Im Jahr 241 v. Chr. bestimmten sie die Friedensbedingungen. Ein trügerischer Frieden, der nicht lange halten sollte.

Hannibal beschließt den Kampf gegen Rom. Der berühmte Feldherr durchlebte eine außergewöhnliche Jugend - als Kind unter Soldaten. Unter der Führung seines Vaters lernte er das Kriegshandwerk. Acht Jahre nach dessen Tod übernimmt Hannibal im Alter von 26 Jahren die Führung der Armee. Als erstes Angriffsziel hat sich der durchtriebene General Sagunt auserkoren. Die unter römischer Schutzherrschaft stehende, wohlhabende Handelsstadt auf der Iberischen Halbinsel fällt nach achtmonatiger Belagerung in Hannibals Hände. Nach der Eroberung von Sagunt fordert eine römische Gesandtschaft in Karthago die Auslieferung des siegreichen Helden. Als das Ultimatum verweigert wird, erklärt die militärische Großmacht, erneut die Waffen sprechen zu lassen. Doch der zweite punische Krieg bringt Rom beinahe den Untergang und damit das Ende eines aufstrebenden Imperiums.

It all began in the autumn of 2004: I found an old dust covered CD-Rom of the Computer game "Grand Prix Legends" in my cluttered attic. It is a racing game from the year 1998 (and I knowingly refer to it as a game and not a simulator, because gaming for me implies enjoyment and fun times). After many good games, and thoroughly re-immersing myself in the world of Grand Prix legends, I also stumbled across Grand Prix Legends Films - Machinima. GPL-Films from Barchetta, Kinst VonSterga, GXTracker, Kevin Clark and many others like them have inspired me deeply to create my first, own Machinima: "DQ".
