When Adam and Eve sinned against God, their consciousness also became corrupted; and all people as a result have also inherited a sinful nature and a corrupted consciousness because of Adam and Eve. In this condition it is completely impossible for anyone to be righteous by their own insights and efforts alone. Redemption for mankind must come from a source that is outside of mankind, and that source is God.
