When Brigham Young led his Mormon followers westward to the Utah Territory, polygamy was taught--not as an option, but as a requirement for eternal life. Since then, the mainline LDS Church has rejected the practice, but not the doctrine, of polygamy. Yet many fundamentalist Mormons continue the practice today, out of obedience to the teachings and revelations of the early Mormon Church.
