Skinny interviews Annie MacLeod of Evergreen, a non-for-profit organization that is developing the Brick Works into an urban oasis. The Don Valley Brick Works, one of the oldest brick factories in Ontario, was founded in 1889. During its heyday, it churned out 43 million bricks every year. A lot of these bricks were used in the construction of many landmark buildings in Toronto.
The Brick Works will be a centre for experiencing the relationship between nature, culture and community. It will offer many programs and services â gardening workshops, a farmers market, Jamie Kennedyâs newest restaurant inspired by his on site garden, and leading-edge green design techniques.
