An Union Engineer, Sterling Hayden, is sent in secrete to assist and not stir the local politics. The elderly Kansas Pacific Engineer's daughter resents the idea of this stranger pushing her father out of a job. This film has the hallmarks of a classic western as the Confederacy sympathizers blaze their cannons to stop military supplies westward.
