Short documentary on ITER and fusion power;
The ITER project aims to build a fusion device, twice the size of the largest current devices, with the goal of demonstrating the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. It is a joint project between the European Union, China, India, Japan, South Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA. ITER will be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache in the south of France. The fusion reactor is expected to start operating in 2016.
In a fusion reaction, two light atomic nuclei fuse together to form heavier ones. The fusion process releases a large amount of energy, which is the energy source of the sun and the stars.
Fusion has some key features which make it an attractive option in a future energy mix: the fusion process is inherently safe; waste which will not be a burden for future generations; no emission of greenhouse gases; and the capacity for large scale energy production.
