Wooden shoes or clumps were widely used in Europe, especially in the "wet" countries.
The hand crafting them is an old and dying art. Mr. Beekhuiszen from Holland is a champion in this art. Just by looking at your feet he makes you a perfectly fitting pair (of "klompen").
