Set during the Mexican Revolution, The Fighter is a hard hitting cinematic experience, weaving together heroism, boxing, tragedy, and politics. Based on the novel “The Mexican” by Jack London, the film stars superb actor Richard Conte as a young man who’s lost everything when his family, and entire village, is massacred by the Mexican dictatorship. Conte joins the revolutionaries, but realizes that he could perhaps support their efforts best by earning big bucks as a prizefighter. The boxing scenes, without question, are some of the most powerful and brutal ever filmed. Shakespearian superstar Lee J. Cobb contributes a strong performance as well, which elevates The Fighter to the level of classic.
