Father Lionel,ofm studied at the Studium Biblicum Jerusalem for his Licentiate in Theology (Bible specialisation). He also holds a graduate Diploma from the Ecole Biblique(Jerusalem), STB from the Pontifical Urban University and BA (Hons) from the University of London. He was the director of the Studium Biblicum in Hong Kong. In 2006 he earned the SSL from the Pontifical faculty for Biblical Sciences and Archaeology.
