Michael Stern was injured at birth and is subsequently severely disabled, amongst other disabilities, lacking the capacity for speech. Despite these disabilities and a lifetime of institutional care, Michael shines as a refined, charming and good humored subject. His elder brother who commissioned the film to be made, provides an articulate and poignant backbone for Michael's story and for the film's ultimate aim, to investigate Michael's state of happiness and quality of life.
