December 2, 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery as designated by the United Nations in 1949. The Frederick Douglass Family Foundation wants to commemorate this important anniversary through an effort to raise awareness about the existence of modern-day slavery and human trafficking.
We would like America’s young people to coordinate the effort. Awareness is the first and most important step to ending slavery in our lifetime. Until the public better understands the crisis of modern day slavery it will continue to thrive in the shadows.
The objective for International Abolition Day 2009 is for participating students to reach out to other students, teachers, parents and the surrounding community as well as the local and national media with a message about the existence of modern day slavery.
