The idea for The Dinner Party came about after reading a newspaper article about a woman who had murdered her husband and disposed of the body with the help her lover, who was also her sister-in-law. In the present film these circumstances have been changed to a group of friends, and the element of cannibalism has been introduced to add a little colour. The result is a confusing shambles which carries the viewer deep into caverns of wretchedness.
