It's pre-WWII and the film opens with a father, mother and 6 year old daughter moving to the country. Most of the film takes place on a single long day when father and daughter wander around the countryside meeting kids and people, going to the beach, saving three of the local kids from some sort of military artillery practice, and doing a lot of talking.
