You can absolutely be fired for no reason at all in the state of New York. New York, like many other states, has adopted the Actwell Employment Doctrine and that means exactly that...that you can be fired for any reason at all at any time. If your employer doesn't like what you wore that day you can be fired. If your employer doesn't like your attitude you can be fired. If your employer asks you to do something illegal and you decline to do that, shockingly, in New York you can be fired for that and your employer can't be held liable for that.
