Private Companies Partner with Local Agencies to Assist in Natural Disaster Response
When a natural disaster strikes, state emergency agencies are responsible for getting people out of harm's way. In these events, receiving and relaying information is crucial for successful response and recovery.
In recent years, companies like Wal-Mart, Kroger, Home Depot and OnStar have begun partnering with the government to assist in disaster response. In fact, when something like a flood or hurricane is inevitable, OnStar sets up a Crisis Assist team. Working directly with the local emergency management team, they relay up-to-date information to any subscriber who needs it in the affected area. With the push of a button, they can be connected to a specialized advisor who can provide real time information including updates on weather, evacuation routes and shelters.
