Last weekend I tried to run eight miles - the approximate distance of the race, minus the insane hurdles and need for upper body strength and extraordinary willpower. After 4, I could barely jog at all with a sore left knee, and after 6 I went home. To adjust, I have started strengthening my knee more and stretching better. I will be trying this again soon, but for now, this is, sadly, a lesson learned through failure.
