Following the massive earthquake that devastated Haiti last night, the European Commission has coordinated efforts in a meeting called by Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative and EC Vice-President, and with Karel de Gucht, EC member in charge of Development and Humanitarian aid, and Stavros Dimas, EC member in charge of Environment (where is included the Civil Protection Mechanism and the Monitoring and Information Centre (the so-called MIC).
The European Commission has open a channel of â¬3 millions and is ready to redirect part of the â¬28 millions that Haiti was due to receive. A flight from Dominican Republic will bring experts to the area in order to evaluate the situation and to coordinate better the needed aid. By the moment, fresh water, communications and medical support are the main priorities.
The Civil Protection Mechanism has been already put in place, and 3 Member States (Belgium, Sweden and Luxembourg) have answered with their offers to be sent, among others water purifiers, emergency ... Distributed by Tubemogul.
