KANEOHE BAY,Hawaii (July 15,2010) U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit One (EODMU-1) test the Remote Environmental Measuring Units (REMUS) 600,an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) that is operated by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units to locate mines using autonomous guidance and advanced SONAR. EODMU-1 is using the clear waters off Hawaii during Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2010 to test and document the AUV. EOD already uses the REMUS 100 UUV which has a range up to 100 meters deep. The REMUS 600 operates up to 600 meters deep and can be configured for deeper mine countermeasure operations. EOD is transitioning to AUVs to decrease the use of marine mammals in dangerous underwater mine countermeasure operations.
