Israel gained additional land but multiplied its problems with the addition of a million Palestinian Arabs after the Six Day War of 1967. The Palestinian Liberation Organization under Arafat sought recognition and independence from Israel. Muslim fundamentalists assassinated Egypt’s Sadat. Iran threw out its hated shah and became an authoritarian fundamentalist Muslim state under the Ayatollah Khomeini. Hussein’s Iraq initiated a 10 year war with Iran, and later invaded Kuwait; the Gulf War followed. Hatreds and rivalries continue to darken the Middle East today.
