A Very British Halloween Message. When I were a lad, we didn't use Pumpkins for ar' Halloween Lanterns. Pumpkins see are an American thing, and American things tend to be quite poor and thoroughly unBritish. No, ar' Mam would bring us home a Turnip (or were it a Swede?). We would spend hours carving ar' Lantern out of ar' cold hard Turnip, and it gave us pride. Then we'd eat it, as we were poor folk and it was a treat to have something as exotic as a Turnip, and a nice change from ar' usual Potato. Still, there were a down side. Every once in a while, you'd get a Turnip that was sort of haunted as it were, by an evil spirit. By them were the days.
