(1940) Davey Fenwick leaves for college on a scholarship. He hopes to return one day to help the coal miners with their unsafe working conditions. He falls in love with Jenny and marries her but realizes too late that she still loves her old boyfriend. He must then deal with his personal problems in addition to the plight of the coal miners, one of whom happens to be his father.
