Current water treatment systems relying on filters to remove impurities and salts suffer from repeated fouling and the need for regular cleaning and replacement. These systems also require lots of energy for building sufficient hydrostatic pressure to operate. In 2011, Danish biotech company Aquaporin A/S introduced a new liquid membrane system to create ultrapure water without filters or wasting expensive energy based on the membranes of living cells.
