Majority of the time the "Greys" are conscious of our mental status. They are here to help our species survive in a healthy, happy environment without their assistance. They realize their presents is terrifying. Just as animals are when the farmer comes in sight of its livestock. Aliens like Farmers are all not the same. Some are more caring than others.
