It has been slightly over a hundred years since the Ottoman Empire committed one of the most awful tragedies of the 20th century – genocide of the Armenian people. Muslim Ottoman Turkey considered Christian Armenians second-rate people, they had been for years oppressed, humiliated and put to death. The tragedy of 1915 became the culmination of suffering of ethnic Armenians in Turkey when more than 1.5 million people were killed. However Istanbul has so far refused to take any responsibility for the atrocities, intentionally understating the number of innocent victims.
Many world powers have recognized the genocide of Armenian people, among them are Austria, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden and others. Germany has recently joined them as well, when its Parliament almost unanimously adopted a resolution declaring the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 a genocide.
The United States has repeatedly proclaimed the need to restore historical justice and call things by their proper names. When Barak Obama was a presidential candidate in 2008 he even made a campaign vow to recognize Armenian genocide if elected. Still, relations with the NATO ally over the course of two presidential terms have been more important than the memory about the suffering of people.
Today we urge the future President of the United States Hillary Clinton to make a pledge to recognize as genocide the massacre of Armenians by Turks in 1915!
