Trevor A. Dyson-Hudson, M.D. is a Clinical Research Scientist with the Kessler Research Center (West Orange, NJ) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Medical School. He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1995. In 1992, while he was a third-year medical student, Dr. Dyson-Hudson sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI; C6/C7 tetraplegia, complete). Following a year of rehabilitation, he returned to medical school in 1993 and graduated in 1995. Before her spinal cord injury, Donnas life was pretty typical. She was married, had a 4-year old son, and worked full time as a corporate reference librarian. Donna needed surgery to relieve pressure caused by herniated disks in her neck, and planned for 6 weeks leave to recover. When she awoke after surgery however, she was totally paralyzed. All I could do was shrug my shoulders. I was out of work for a year and I was in and out of physical therapy for 23 years. It was loss of independence that was the hardest to accept, Donna recalled.
