Thierry Gombs, Director of Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, Reviews St. Maarten Arts in the Plaza

Thierry Gombs, director of culture, sports and youth affairs in St. Maarten, discusses the importance of the Arts in the Plaza festival to St. Maarten. "I think that the event should be something interesting. It is always good to showcase what we have here in St. Maarten -- whether they are native St. Maarteners or people that decided to live here in St. Maarten, they show off their art. It is an event that could promote the island that could showcase what is done locally here, and of course, anything that is done for the promotion of this little rock, I'm there," said Gombs. The event is free and open to the public. The festival will continue into 2011 with new performances and exhibits each month scheduled for January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18. A complete listing of featured artists will be announced prior to each event at http://www.stmaartenlife.com. For festival updates like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/artsintheplaza.
Caribbean Steel Drum Musician Neville York Reviews St. Maarten Arts in the Plaza

Neville York, one of the most recognized steel drum players in the world explained that the Arts in the Plaza festival is very important to St. Maarten. "From a cultural perspective, it gives the artist a venue to express something that it cannot express at a bar, for example. So it is not music that you are going to be hearing at a bar or nightclub. This is truly an evening where artists can express themselves in the purest form that is most true to themselves," he said. Neville York is one of the top 10 steel drum (pan) players in the world. He performs with symphony orchestras in Holland and Europe and uses Marshall Vente's "Tropicale" as his band. Neville is a native of St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles and a graduate of Northern Illinois University. Over the last three years Neville has performed with Marshall in Chicago and also in St. Maarten. The St. Maarten Arts in the Plaza event is free and open to the public. The festival will continue into 2011 with new performances and exhibits each month scheduled for January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18. A complete listing of featured artists will be announced prior to each event at http://www.portocupecoy.com.
Father of Caribbean Impressionism Reviews St. Maarten's Arts in the Plaza Festival

St. Maarten is set to welcome some of the Caribbean's finest artists for the inaugural "Arts in the Plaza" event taking place on December 22nd, 2010. Held in the plaza at Porto Cupecoy, the monthly arts festival will be of the first of its kind to combine visual, performing and musical arts from St Martin/St Maarten's avant-garde arts scene. For more information: http://stmaartenlife.com The festival promises to be one of the most important arts events in this part of the world, featuring Dutch, French, Indian and Island Caribbean influences. This month's launch, taking place December 22nd from 7-11 p.m., will be open to the public, kicking off the high season on the island. According to Roland Richardson, father of Caribbean Impressionism, "The plaza and the cultural events that we are planning there, will be a genuine addition to the island. It will be contributing something, as well as, giving those who are working in the many disciples of arts and crafts, an opportunity through a beautiful venue and promotions, to get known, be seen and contribute to the event. As we become more culturally conscious and aware, we function on a higher level of consciousness. St. Maarten has that potential and this opportunity is definitely one of those means by which it can actually be implemented," said Richardson. The event is free and open to the public. The festival will continue into 2011 with new performances and exhibits each month scheduled for January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18. I have seen fire artists and amazing stilt walkers who dance five to 10 feet off of the ground," said Reyes. The event is free and open to the public.
