One of the grand festivals of Madurai. Held at the huge tank (theppakulam) built by King Tirumalai Nayak with an island at the center, which is fed by underground channels from the Viagai river. The idols from the Madurai Meenakshi Sundeswara temple are brought to the tank and taken around in a beautifully decorated float. In the evening the scene becomes very colorful and fascinating with the island, tank and float lit up and with a display of fireworks. This feast which is also well attended is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan.-Feb)on poosam star day. This tank is familiarly known as madurai theppakulam, theppa thiruvila, mariamman theppakulam & vandiyur theppakulam.
