Oxford Street launched a Great British Fashion Flag Showcase with 147 union flags - including 10 dedicated fashion flags to celebrate Great British Fashion - ahead of the HM Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 36 days' time. Oxford Street's Great British Fashion Flag Showcase of 90 foot high above the iconic fashion flagships, representing 147 years of fashion for the world famous high street, will be seen by an excess of 12 million shoppers from more than 200 countries for six weeks only as Jubilee mania takes the hold across the globe. Campaigners are calling on European ministers -- attending the Durban Climate Change conference (28 Nov - 09 Dec 2011) - to follow the lead of the United Nations after it suspended a controversial carbon credits scheme that encouraged developing countries to build coal power projects. The UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is designed to encourage global financial markets to invest in low carbon projects and has created a trading market worth USD$144 billion. Now pictures have now emerged showing how open cast mining at the Sasan thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh in India, funded through carbon credits, has forced some of the world's poorest from their homes and left communities destroyed. The UN suspended coal projects from the carbon offset scheme because the rules used to calculate emission reductions had resulted in the creation of "artificial carbon credits". It will now look at new methods of monitoring and verifying the effects of carbon credits. More than 450 economists from over 40 countries are calling for legislation on agricultural commodity speculation, which is driving up food prices and fuelling hunger. With around 1 billion people enduring chronic hunger worldwide, economists believe excessive financial speculation is contributing to increasing volatility and record food prices, further exacerbating global hunger and poverty driving global hunger figures to their highest on record. In a signed letter to G20 finance ministers, economists are calling for urgent action to curb excessive speculation and its effects on global food prices. The economists are demanding greater control over financial gambling by speculators by ensuring that strict rules are put in place to limit the hold of bankers over the world’s food markets. The US has led the way in seeking to control speculation and European proposals for similar rules are expected to be announced next week. However, lobbying from the finance sector is delaying political action and the UK government are set to block European legislation. Economists from top universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Cornell, Berkeley, Vienna and the London School of Economics have signed the letter, adding their voices to an escalating international campaign. 06 June 2010: Figures suggest that 41% of British adults regularly play online farming games, with nearly two thirds of those playing for up to five hours a week. But whilst these games may be fun, research suggests that they are in fact disconnecting us from what happens on a real farm. Those who play online farming games were twice as likely as those who don't to think that cotton is farmed in Britain. • Over 11% expected to find rice growing on a British farm. One in four wouldn't expect to find chickens on a farm in this country But it's not just those playing online games that are disconnected with the countryside. Sadly, one in ten families have never visited a working farm, and worryingly nearly one in five said that it is easier to stay indoors than visit the countryside with 7% thinking there is nothing to do there. The research commissioned by LEAF, organisers of Open Farm Sunday (13 June), also reveals that: 'Tweeting' has taken on a new meaning for many people. 7 in 10 adults relate the term to messages sent on Twitter, compared to just 1 in 10 who associated to bird song. Over half of respondents didn't know what is meant by the term 'Beetle Bank' -- 1 in 10 thought it referred to a collection of pop memorabilia or a compound where old cars are stored. In reality, 'Beetle Banks' play a vital role in providing habitat for a range of farm wildlife and insects, and is actually 'a strip of grass in a field', correctly identified by only 13%. Organised by LEAF, Open Farm Sunday is an annual event where over 400 farmers across the UK open their gates to the public and offer a real insight into life behind the farm gate. From tractor and trailer rides, to sheep shearing and pig racing, and not forgetting the picnics and BBQs, there really is something for the whole family to enjoy.
