Uniting Humanity - the Kibera projectUNITING HUMANITY FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT Our belief is that sustainable economic development is the solution for the eradication of poverty in the world generally and in Africa in particular. We have come to Kibera slum in Nairobi Kenya, the largest slum in East Africa, (estimated 1,500,000 residents in aprox 1000 acres of undulating land about 6kms from the heart of the city). Here our main aim is to create meaningful employment for as many people as possible, the youth unemployment rate being 70%. STAGE 1: We have established a small production unit in Kibera where we are producing costume jewellery and decorative art. Our first aim is to sell our production in Australia and Kenya and become financially self sufficient at the earliest time. STAGE 2: There are many obvious employment opportunities waiting to be created in Kibera. As funds become available from our first endeavour and also as trained staff is in surplus, we will select and create more job opportunities in other fields. Staff training starts with literacy and numeracy skills, which have eluded many in Kibera. There is also an opportunity to establish âÂÂmicro bankingâ facilities in selected circumstances. We believe this initiative is best suited to operate at the âÂÂcoal faceâ and be staffed by âÂÂlocalsâÂÂ. STAGE 3: Our ultimate aim is to help those who are unable to help themselves. There are an estimated 70,000 orphans in Kibera as a result of the ravages of AIDS with no means of support. We aim to establish 10-15 acre âÂÂfarmsâ each supporting 100 orphans, where they will be loved, housed, schooled and trained. We believe the majority of funding for this endeavour will come from our own surpluses. Our website www.unitinghumanity.org.au will provide details of the current status of developments as they occur. FINALLY we acknowledge the headship of Almighty God in whom we put our trust and thank for all provision, protection and direction in this endeavour.
