I started growing my beard a year ago today. It?s my beardiversary. Randomly, a friend emailed me this morning and said ?Love the beard? as a sign-off. Like the N93, it was just supposed to be a brief experiment. I even shaved it off after 2 months to make one of my first proper little films with my phone (and as a tribute to Scorsese for finally winning his Oscar). I used the same music as his amazing 1967 short The Big Shave . I posted it on FatGirlInOhio - it was pre-Twittervlog. So lots of you won?t have seen it - and really, it also belongs here. Click to Play I feel sad that this is over. I feel sad that I didn't complete it in the way that I'd planned. Even though I never planned to. But much more than that, I feel like laughing out loud for everyone else. All those who took part in just a little bit of it, those who got through most or almost all of it, and those who did it every day, within the deadline. A film every day for a month. That's so great. Click To Play Just a collection of moments from today. I wish I could have shown you the Gnome House. It was one of the sweetest things I?ve ever seen. Amy was awed. But it was way too dark to film. (Even my kitchen at night is too dark to film. It?s the one thing that really bugs me about the N93. I think I?m going to have to stop using it soon, so I can have some fun with colours and night-time filming.) Anyway, the school is pretty amazing. Those drawings I show on the way into the main building - they?re by people in Class 9, who are (I guess) 15/16 years old. It?s not an art school. I read on Twitter that some other NaVloPoMoers have been making it, and I thought I?d have a go myself. I?m not much of a cook, but as I mentioned the other night, one of my 15 failed 2007 New Year?s Resolutions was to cook 2 recipes every week. This was actually preceded by another scene in which she was crying uncontrollably, and I tried singing Baa Baa Black Sheep, Row Row Row Your Boat, Five Little Ducks and Horsey Horsey to calm her down, to no avail. Then I had a moment of divine inspiration and started singing something which made her instantly flop in my lap, head back, still and calm: the theme from Star Wars. Anybody looking through the window at us would?ve been forgiven for thinking that I was singing Ave Maria. Not that she?s seen Star Wars. The only time she?s heard any of the music was in Car Going Fast film. Which was a bit of a favourite last week. So me singing the theme reminded her (a totally different part of the theme, though, so she?s pretty smart to pick it up). Next thing I knew, she was sitting on the loo demanding Car Going Fast. Another thing I?ll miss in evergreen Vancouver Island. I was trying to persuade her to sing her song The Falling of the Leaves (a Yeats poem she set to music - you can hear it on her Myspace page ) so that I could use it as a soundtrack for the other moments I shot all around the woods. I?ve been away from the internet this weekend. Shocking, but true. Just testing out the Amish thing. Anyway, here it is. I shot it in Canada in August, in the woods along Long Beach on Vancouver Island ( map/satphoto ). I usually shoot a lot of still photos on holiday. This time, I shot a lot of moving snapshots, only one or two of which I?ve published so far. Basically, I just experimented with keeping the camera still and shooting a movie instead of a still. Slightly different compositions from what I?d choose for photos, but you see what I mean. I was frequently surprised by what would unfold within the frame in the minute or so I kept the camera running - plus you get the extra dimensions of moving light, and sound (though not here). I shot this on Monday in Devon, on the way back from Kate?s dad?s cottage to the station in the nearest town. 20 minutes of death star taxi adrenaline. I was wondering what I should do with it until I saw Gogen?s NaVloPoMo Day 7 video of his drive back home through his town at night, set to music. Then I realised I?d secretly known all along what to do with it. NaVloPoMo is full of people responding to and being inspired by other people?s videos. Organic video conversations . I love it. And I love how - when cutting quickly to music - you can find and take advantage of chance interactions between image and soundtrack. It feels good to finally add the score for real, since when I?m actually driving at high speed along single lane country roads, this is *always* what I?m singing to myself in my head. And if I?m driving and there?s nobody else in the car, maybe perhaps sometimes I might even possibly have been k...

Click To Play Just some moments from a trip down the river yesterday. It?s a funny thing - I probably wouldn?t post this if it weren?t for NaVloPoMo. Because it?s aspiring to be something it?s not. I wanted to do NaVloPoMo because I thought it?d make me feel more comfortable posting just *anything* without judging it too much. I wonder whether it?s having the opposite effect. Seeing all the amazing things other people are posting has made me dissatisfied with the kind of stuff I?m doing with this phone. It?s made me realise that I?ve been getting increasingly frustrated with my mobile phone?s aesthetic limitations. It shoots good *resolution* for a phone but I don?t really like the colours, the contrast, the *character* of the video it makes. So while it?s great for capturing personal human moments and posting them in the moment, without frills, it?s not so good for taking moving snapshots of *things* that I see and want to photograph. Click To Play I hate London. I?m in Devon, staying at my father-in-law?s house on the River Dart. This is a Lumiere that I shot when I was out in a boat with him earlier this evening. (Lumiere films have no sound - see http://videoblogging.info/lumiere for more information) Earlier in the day, we went to Dartmouth on the ferry. I shot 120 clips, and cut them together as a little moving slideshow. But then I forgot my own rules, and cut them in Final Cut Pro instead of something quick & easy like my phone or Quicktime. It didn?t improve the quality of the finished product at all, I don?t think - and I forgot to compress it before I went out for a drunken dinner. So now here I am at 11.45, with the video still stuck compressing and my Day 3 deadline unachievable. So it?s lucky I shot this Lumiere. In some ways, I prefer it to the video I was going to post. I love watching moments from journeys, cut together without explanation or narrative, with jumping atmospheric sound, for no better reason than they were images and sounds that the filmmaker noticed and wanted to capture. Magic. I'm not sure I'm so good at doing that, but I've been sufficiently inspired to get off my arse and cut together one of my own journeys. Click to Play Finally, I think I've pushed through my period of panic and uncertainty and unhappiness with my work. I wanted to find a way to balance money earning work and creativity better - and to make good money from my skills and talents without having to do the same thing week in, week out. I'm easily bored and love nothing better than working on new ideas and completing projects quickly. Less simple cheap websites for people, more online video for slightly larger companies doing good things who need video to tell their stories better. Short, well-paid, achievable projects, and no guilt for spending time working on personal video projects (self-development). It seems obvious, but JESUS it's taken me a long time to work it out. It?s not often you get something that presses Geek, Art and Theatre buttons all at the same time. You?ll see what it is by watching the video. It?s inspired use of new technology - Blast Theory , the artists behind it, have created something really Of The Moment, that couldn?t have happened until right now - or at least not in such an effective way. The key ingredients are: the Nokia N800 (released in January, the sister device to my N93) a wide screen portable computer with Wifi wireless internet access and GPS satellite positioning; and The Cloud, the new City-wide wifi network. For the benefit of both non-geeks reading this, these are the things that allow us, the riders, to roam around London, for it to know exactly where we are, to connect with the home server and allow us to hear other people - even those recording their me...

This one is quite different to the one I posted before. Or is it? I don?t know. This one is half the length and has music (My Blue Wave, hence the title and lyrics of the last post). It was the revised cut - the other one I posted was my first assembly. Then I really stripped all the shots down to their essences. So there you go - you get to see some process. Lucky you.
