For more information, please go to: http://www.cncinformation.com Before we head out to the shop and begin CNC Plasma Cutting, we will check out our G-Code program in Mach 3. This will give us some confidence when running our CNC Program. Mach 3 is a great CNC Control Program. It takes our G-Code and converts it into Signal for the CNC Controller. The CNC Controller then sends the signals out to either Servo Motors or Stepper Motors. These motors then move the axis to create motion.

We will use SheetCAM to define our tools and our CNC Process. First we pick the tool that we will use. Next we go through the different Machining Parameters and define them. Then we look at the start and stop points to see if they are in good location. Finally we post-process a g-code file that has all the information we need to machine or cut out the part. Post-Processors can easily be changed in SheetCAM. I have a unique one for my machine because I built my own machine. There are standard ones and customs one. Each of them produce a G-Code file that your CNC Control Software can execute.

I happen to use Rhino 3D, so that is what we will use for this CNC Video. Inside of Rhino 3D, we make a rectangle of our stock. Next, we place the image inside of this rectangle. Finally we resize the CNC Image so it fits properly inside of our stock rectangle. Rhino has some other great tools, like a line simplification tool. We use that to simplify the image and cut down on the size of our G-Code File later. At the end of the CNC Video, we export our resized image as a DXF File. Again we choose one of the oldest file formats available. Mainly because it will work with many different CAD Software Packages.

First we take a look at the image for defects. We find a few and use the Illustrator weld tool to get rid of them. Next we export the image out as a dxf file. DXF Files are common currency between CAD Programs. When we export, we go with the oldest type of DXF File available. I do it that way because I find it makes a simpler file that virtually any CAD Program can open and use. Next we go into our CAD Program to resize our file to the proper dimensions.

Live Trace is a tool that quickly and easily converts our Raster Image to a Vector Image. For CNC Art, we need Vector Images. We also go over a number of different presets that are available in Live Trace. Most of these we don't use, but they are available for other projects. Converting images to CNC is hard. Live Trace makes that conversion very easy.
