ローカル線向けに昭和7年(1932年)から昭和22年(1947年)にかけて282両が製造された、タンク式蒸気機関車です。 C12 222は、昭和14年(1939年)日本車輌名古屋工場で製造番号741として落成。九州で活躍しました。 昭和42年(1967年)に熊本機関区へと転属。熊本区所属を示す緑色のナンバーや、キャブ内換気目的の後部通風孔、石炭積載量増加を目的とした炭庫の改造等が特徴です。高森線(現南阿蘇鉄道高森線)の阿蘇外輪山に沿い、第一白川橋梁など見所の多い立野～高森間17.7kmを、1日1往復の混合列車や、客車2両の旅客列車の牽引で活躍しました。高森線内には転車台が無く、高森方面行列車はバック運転での牽引を行いました。 昭和47年(1972年)まで活躍し、現在はJR九州小倉総合車両センター内に保存されています。
