This is a rare nature film from the silent era in filmmaking. The subject (described by text cards) is the life of the cuckoo. The habits and behavior of the cuckoo were still a mystery in the 1920s, and this documentary explores all aspects of this cute and cuddly bird in great detail. The female Cuckoo abandons her duties as a mother once her eggs are laid, choosing instead to place her eggs in the nest of the same type of bird that she herself was hatched into. While the host bird initially puts up a fight, it eventually welcomes the baby cuckoo bird as its own, feeding and taking care of it until it is capable of surviving in the wild. Overall this film is a wonderful exploration of vintage nature filmmaking as well as adorable little birds.

Felling Forest Giants is an early silent film that documents the 1920's logging industry in the Pacific Northwest, from pictures of the felling of giant redwoods to views of the saw mills in the east. Some interesting and rare scenes from the lives of loggers are also shown, including oxen shoeing that helps the oxen transport the cut logs, and participating in a log-rolling competition on a river. Scenes of the mill work including forestry supplies and forestry tools in order to process the giant trees are explored. This film shows the timber industry in its historical form including some scenes of mistreatment of animals that would shock modern audiences. Felling Forest Giants is an eye opening exposure to logging industry history and the lives over loggers and timber workers.

Prof. Hugo comes home from the lab for a relaxing day of showing cartoons and serials, but is hindered by his nemesis Harvey Ghoulash, who is more interested in watching women's roller derby than in listening to Hugo drone on and on. Clips include an early (human) Tom & Jerry cartoon, Harvey Ghoulash's "improved" version of the 1950's horror classic, "The Giant Gila Monster," and chapter 6 of the 1920's Tarzan serial, "Tarzan the Tiger." This is the great comedic genius W.C. Fields’ first motion picture appearance! During Fields’ period of stage performance at Ziegield Follies, he recorded this wonderful silent short film, Pool Sharks. The film has the earnest plot of two men vying for the attentions of the same woman. To settle the score, they decide on a game of pool. At the time, Fields was famous for trick shots on a rigged table, but here the magic shots are achieved with early stop-motion techniques. Afterwards, the two men settle for fisticuffs and some good old fashion physical comedy breaks out. Fields, having not quite perfected his famous misanthropic persona at this point, still packs in plenty of laughs. He manages to push a boy out of a chair to use on his adversary! Pool Sharks is a little piece of cinematic history that provides a glimpse of the birth of a fantastic Hollywood icon.

There's a crack near the bridge area, but that's about it. The sound of the violin is dark and plenty loud. This episode explains how politicians on the left, in both Britain and America, turned to the techniques developed by business to read and fulfil the inner desires of the self. Both New Labour, under Tony Blair, and the Democrats, led by Bill Clinton, used the focus group, which had been invented by psychoanalysts, in order to regain power. They set out to mould their policies to people's inner desires and feelings, just as capitalism had learnt to do with products. Out of this grew a new culture of public relations and marketing in politics, business and journalism. One of its stars in Britain was Matthew Freud who followed in the footsteps of his relation, Edward Bernays, the inventor of public relations in the 1920s. The politicians believed they were creating a new and better form of democracy, one that truly responded to the inner feelings of individual. But what they didn't realise was that the aim of those who had originally created these techniques had not been to liberate the people but to develop a new way of controlling them.

The story of the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays. Bernays invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to take Freud's ideas to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations how they could make people want things they didn't need by systematically linking mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires. Bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion, using every trick in the book, from celebrity endorsement and outrageous PR stunts, to eroticising the motorcar. His most notorious coup was breaking the taboo on women smoking by persuading them that cigarettes were a symbol of independence and freedom. But Bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. It was a new political idea of how to control the masses. By satisfying the inner irrational desires that his uncle had identified, people could be made happy and thus docile. It was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate today's world.
