Today's Top Stories (June 16, 2009) - International reactions to Iran elections – Tuesday 16 June Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived at the Russian city of Yekaterinburg today to attend the ninth annual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Iran has an observer status in the SCO, which includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgystan. A spokeswoman for Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev told reporters that: “the heads of SCO member states congratulated Ahmadinejad on his reelection.” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said today that: "We welcome the fact that the elections have taken place, and we welcome the newly re-elected Iranian president on the Russian soil." Ryabkov added that: "It's quite symbolic that the Iranian president arrived in Russia on his first foreign visit since re-election. To celebrate the release of Tubular Bells and Mike Oldfield: The Collection, there was an international event on Saturday 6th June, which saw eight countries around the Globe taking part on BELL DAY. In the UK, the British Music Experience at the 02 hosted a spectacular event - The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain Vs The Orb. The 29-piece handbell ensemble played a version of Tubular Bells while The Orb DJ'ed a Orbular Bells set. People came from all over the country to watch and then join in on amassed handbells. The 2009 version of the show has been a huge success with millions of people tuning in every week to see the talented and the not so talented acts perform. As of writing this currently two semi finals have been broadcast, and by watching them I can honestly say that this year will not be the one horse race that everyone expected it to be. He suggested that the rich nations should bury their differences with China by taking ownership of some of the greenhouse gas emissions that China produces. He was speaking via live weblink to 72 venues screening Franny Armstrong’s film The Age of Stupid. At present, Britain and the other rich nations accept responsibility only for the greenhouse gas emissions produced on their own territory. China says that this is unfair because many of the goods we consume are manufactured there, leaving China with emissions that should by rights belong to us. If the UK was responsible for the emissions it has offshored to other countries, instead of falling 16% since 1990, our greenhouse gases would have risen by 19%.
