A treasure of early silent films, White Fawn’s Devotion is probably one of the first films made by Native Americans. The film meditates on cultural and racial issues including but not limited to: Native Americans, white settlers, interracial marriage, and cultural loyalty. The story moves quickly, as a white settler marries a Native American and they have a daughter. Trouble ensues, however, when the settler learns he’s inherited a large sum of money and wishes to leave the more natural lifestyle that he’s chosen. Set on the frontier, White Fawn’s Devotion is unique in many aspects: it’s shot on the frontier, as opposed to the hokey sets of most of its contemporaries; it’s not from the white man’s perspective; it takes an honest look at the culture clash that occurred in early America. Above all else, White Fawn’s Devotion is a precious glimpse of America through the eyes of a sadly embittered but powerfully artistic minority.

In this important lecture delivered at the University of Massachusetts, Said takes aim at one of the central tenets of recent foreign policy thinking-- that conflicts between different and "clashing civilizations" (Western, Islamic, Confucian) characterize the contemporary world.
"The real question is whether in the end we want to work for civilizations that are separate, or whether we should be taking the more integrative, but perhaps more difficult path, which is to see them as making one vast whole, whose exact contours are impossible for any person to grasp, but whose certain existence we can intuit and feel and study." -Edward Said
"AS KIDS WHEN PLAYING COPS AND ROBBERS, WHICH SIDE WERE YOU ON?"
Superintendent Chessari is sent to run a small police station on the outskirts of Rome â a temporary posting in a difficult area, with not much backing and very few staff.
His deputy, Lorenzo Corsi, is a youngster just out of the Academy, full of enthusiasm and high principles which clash with the corrupt reality of the streets and the attitude of his colleagues.
The small police station seems like an outlying frontier post, a sort of backwater where recruits and hot-heads are assigned to rot.
Chessari wants a quiet life, and all he does is set up a few routine operations; following suspects and tapping phones.
He tries to avoid making waves that might upset his plans for career advancement.
His men, however, are a bunch of loose canons, who are not intimidated by the rules or regulations imposed upon them and at times risk crossing the line of legality.
