As an amateur, Jason Yee was one of the best fighters the US has ever produced. He was the first American to win a medal in international competition and a multiple time national champion. As a trainer, he pioneered US San Shou with his "dream team". Jason retired from amateur competition in 1995 feeling he had achieved what could be achieved. That was two years before there was such a thing as professional San Shou. Tempted by the lure of professional San Shou and also in large part to help promote the sport, Jason agreed to fight Cung Le on the Pay-Per-View event held in Florida in 1997. Jason agreed to go up in weight. For a man who hadn't fought in two years, had gone up in weight and who had been sick for months before the fight, Jason Yee put in a strong performance but lost a decision to Cung.
