A pianist at the Blue Heaven Nightclub falls for the beautiful singer that he works with but is too shy to do anything about it. So the nightclub owner tells the singer, June, that the pianist, played by Arthur Lake of Blondie movie fame, is really a masked wrestler called The Devil to impress her. In order to keep up the ruse, Lake must do many hilarious things, including feign a broken leg that the actual wrestler sustains in a fight. When the real Devil announces his engagement to another girl during one of the fights, June, who’s in the audience, finds out the truth. Lake must explain everything, and he wins his love in the end after being honest.
This lesser known Humphrey Bogart film was directed by John Huston, who also directed Bogart in both The African Queen and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. In Beat the Devil, Bogart is part of a group of criminal opportunists who travel to Africa to exploit the uranium that has recently been discovered there. On the way, they travel on a steamer with other people who may or may not be traveling for the same reason, including a British married couple. Despite much infighting and betrayal by the members of the gang, they end up in Africa, only to be put in front of an Arab firing squad. Other notables in the cast include Peter Lorre, Jennifer Jones, and Gina Lollabrigida.

A murdered gangster, Eddie Kugel played by Paul Muni, is sent to Hell, which is presided over by Claude Rains’ Satan. After a few escape attempts, Eddie is told by Satan that if he will inhabit the body of a good judge back on earth and start blocking justice from being served, he can win back his soul. Eddie does so, thinking to revenge himself on the man who murdered him, his old gangster underling. Try as he might however, Eddie is unable to cause any mischief and even his plot to revenge himself upon his old buddy doesn’t work out. To make things worse, he also falls in love with the judge’s fiancée, played by Ann Baxter. Once Satan sees that his plan isn’t working, he comes back to earth to recapture the now somewhat reformed Eddie. Eddie won’t go until his gets a promise from Satan that the judge and his fiancée won’t come to any harm.
