As I was walking up to the area in New Orleans where Dave and around a dozen other homeless people were sitting on a sidewalk the local police were making them move. At first I thought how rude. It was over 100 degrees and they were trying to find shade by a local church. But then on another street the officer was nicely talking to the homeless people and telling them an alternative location. Turns out the church does not want homeless people on their sidewalk. Well, that's an easy fix. Open the door and allow them to cool off inside. But that's another story.
Dave says life on the streets is "hot, dirty, grimy". He talks about the local rescue mission charging $5 per night. There has been lots of controversy about this. On my last night in NOLA I was told by someone in the know that the reasoning behind this is because of budget concerns. The mission is out of money and had to make this change to stay open. More medicine on the counter. Old food stains on wall/counter/oven, more trash and dirt on the floor. Some stuff on the table, doesnâÂÂt look like itâÂÂs actually used for eating that much (it never was when I lived there â weâÂÂd snack around wherever, I usually ate in my bedroom or in the den).
Pieces of trash/hair/brown stains/other gunk on the floor, mat and stool are filthy. More shelves of medicine. Dirty and very smelly towel on the floor, brown stains on the sink. Trash doesnâÂÂt look like itâÂÂs been emptied in a while, brown stains on toilet bottom and behind the toilet. Trash/black spots on top of toilet and on it. When I opened the toilet lid, unflushed poop was inside â brown ring at the water line.
IâÂÂm guessing this is SummerâÂÂs room. Dirty clothes, shoes, stuff and trash all over the floor, bed unmade with several dark marks on the sheets, junk all over the dressers and pieces of trash, food and candy wrappers littering the floor. It doesnâÂÂt look like itâÂÂs ever been dusted or cleaned. The two animal cages make the room smell awful, and it doesnâÂÂt look like theyâÂÂve been cleaned in a while â poop and pee make up a good part of the bedding. Dingy walls, some stains. Pieces of trash on the bathroom floor, large assortment of medicines, dirt all in the cracks on the wood floor, brown stains on the sink. Orange/brown stains and mold on the bathtub, pinkish stain (mildew) on the bathtub bottom. Hair/dirt/trash/unknowns on the toilet top, bottom and lid, the inside has a brown ring at the water line.
