The famous Sufis of Kashmir are Sayyid Bulbul Shah, Sayyid Ali Hamdani and Mir Mohammad Hamdani. It is also claimed that Hindu thoughts and religion greatly influenced Kashmiri Sufis. In an effort to spread awareness on the history and values of Sufism among the people of Jammu and Kashmir, an event was recently organised in the valley. Islamic scholars and educationists who attended the event, believe that it is important to make the youth aware of Sufism and cultural values. At the event, various performances were put up by the students to depict the ancient history of Sufism. Classical Sufi scholars have defined Sufism as “a science whose objective is the reparation of the heart and turning it away from all else but God.” The event organised at `Shehr-i-Khas’ in the old Srinagar city was attended by students, parents and locals. The locals voiced their demand for such awareness programmes regarding the importance of Islam, Sufism and cultural values.
