Es gibt historische Aufzeichnungen über Tsunamis, die durch Vulkanausbrüche und Erdverschiebungen entstanden sind. Von überdimensionalen Flutwellen berichten auch deutsche Kolonialvertreter aus dem Jahr 1888 in Papua Neu Guinea: Hervorgerufen durch einen Vulkanausbruch auf Ritter Island.
