Simón, the son of Simeon Stylites, has lived for 6 years, 6 weeks and 6 days atop an eight-meter pillar in the middle of the desert, praying for spiritual purification. He comes down the pillar and is offered priesthood, but refuses because he considers himself unworthy, and forsakes his aging mother for the love of God before climbing up his new pillar. He heals an amputee missing both hands, whose first use of them is to slap his child. But the congregation quickly departs unimpressed, leaving Simón alone. Time goes by and Simón meets a number of regular characters - a handsome priest whom he condemns on grounds of vanity, a dwarf herder and his mother, who comes to live close to him but remains neglected of attention. A woman (Silvia Pinal), Satan, visits him three times: first as an innocent girl chanting curses in Latin, second disguised as Jesus Christ. She constantly tries to make Simón give up his task and climb down the pillar, but he refuses every time. In this special documentary, NHK interviewed more than 200 people including government and TEPCO officials, experts, and engineers. While reluctant, they agreed to speak with NHK. Some of the rather candid comments confirm that TEPCO, nor the Japanese government where adequately prepared for a disaster of this magnitude. The Economy, Trade, and Industry Minister, Banri Kaieda even made a rather damning remark (around the 4m30s mark in clip 1-A) that he could not deny there was a myth of safety regarding the nuclear power plants and that probably somewhere in their minds, they always felt that measures against emergency situations were unnecessary because such situations would never occur. Officials severely underestimated the crisis at the power plant and were essentially complicit in their failure to act in a more decisive and urgent manner. Furthermore, the reported amounts and spread of radioactive fallout were also underestimated. Scientists are now beginning to understand how radioactive contamination spread after they were released from the power plant and the picture is not proving to be pretty. Further monitoring is uncovering radioactive hotspots throughout the Tokyo metropolitan area. This special documentary looks further into the growing impact of radiation from the Dai-ichi nuclear power plant by starting out from the areas adjacent to the crippled power plant, then out to a 100km (62 miles) radius, and then areas beyond where some of these hotspots have been found

After the Plant was brought back online, it suffered another cataclysmic failure, this time blasting all of the surrounding area with radiation, mutating the wildlife and people, and the ones who weren't mutated were driven insane. The Zone of Alienation, known commonly as The Zone, is the area where nothing grows anymore. This area was littered with radioactive isotopes, making it near impossible to inhabit. The second meltdown caused several space-time anomalies that have been of great interest to a select group known as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s. The Stalkers venture into the zone and make their lives in it, searching for rare and valuable artifacts and scientific anomalies.

Another Monochromatic masterpiece from the not so golden age of horror movies. In this Public Domain flick, we find out just how convincing a monster you can create with a surplus diving suit, some paper mache and a few dozen bananas. Slap em all together and add some paint and you have "The Horror of Party Beach! In this gem, the locals of an unidentified oceanside community are shocked when a number of grizzly murders are occuring in their quiet little hamlet. It starts with a single bikini babe buying the farm and progresses through the town drink, all the way up to a full blown sleepover party massacre. If you like radioactive monsters from the deep, then you will love this schlocky monster Mash! Just in time for Halloween!

Produced in 1953, this little Public Domain Gem follows the typical scientist hero as he and his OSI (Office of Scientific Investigation) partner try to track down a deadly new radioactive isotope which if left alone, would eventually destroy the earth. This is in my top ten favorite list for Tacky Drive in Horror and Scifi.

"Walt Disney's Bolt Movie 3D" - A TV star dog drinks martinis with starlets and showboats on sets until he is suddenly abandoned in his trailer in the Nevada desert where he meets up with a radioactive rabbit and a one-eyed cat who are trying to find new homes. "Disney's Bolt Movie 3D" has been renamed. The original title was "American Dog." Perhaps they didn't want it confused with their movie box office bomb of Summer 2007, "Underdog."
