2008年5月下旬、毎日新聞社の英語報道公式サイト Mainichi Daily News（「毎日デイリーニューズ」）のコラム「WaiWai」において、長期に渡り、日本の文化の不正確・猥雑な記事が配信されているとして、日本語のインターネット・コミュニティ（電子掲示板など）で批判が高まり、問題が表面化。同コラムの閉鎖、担当記者の処分や上司らの社長などへの昇進、公式ウェブサイトの編集体制の刷新などに発展した。この件に関して謝罪はされたが、「紹介の仕方が不適切であった」といった趣旨で、内容が不適切であったことは認めていない。
