Based on a Sir Arthur Doyle novel (the author of Sherlock Holmes), The Lost World was the first big special effects film in cinematic history. Utilizing stop-motion capture to animate clay model dinosaurs, the monstrous prehistoric creatures come to life as had never been previously accomplished. Though silent, The Lost World is also a rich dramatic narrative: Professor Challenger (Wallace Beery) theorizes that dinosaurs are still alive in a remote region of South America. Joined by friends, including the stunning Bessie Love who plays Paula White, Challenger sets off on an expedition to prove his theories correct. Once the lost location is found, the transcendent creature effects take center stage and the explorers watch the beasts hunt, gather, and fight. They decide to bring back a brontosaurus to make them all rich. This would work marvelously, if the monster didn’t escape into London! The ensuing chaos is as enthralling and unforgettable as the rest of The Lost World.

The Media That Matters Film Festival, a project of ArtsEngine, just released its 7th annual festival on DVD. They gave us permission to use some of the material of the DVD. These short films are billed as " Short Films that Inspire Action." This is my first claymation. Don't ask what was going on in my mind when I though this whole thing up.

Harvie Krumpet is an Australian claymation, made in St Kilda, Melbourne by Adam Elliot (Melodrama Pictures). This short (23 min) film won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 2003, in addition to numerous festival awards and the 2004 Australian Film Institute Best Short Animation award.

Das Rad (English title: Rocks) is a German claymation film written and directed by Chris Stenner, Arvid Uibel and Heidi Wittlinger. The film tracks a hillside from ancient times through the present and into the future, usually moving through time at high speed (so that buildings appear and disappear in an instant) but occasionally switching to real time and showing the inhabitants and objects in motion in their day-to-day existence. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short for 2002.
